Nabala Secondary School, the sole institution with a drum band in the Northern Division, has finally upgraded its musical equipment after a 16-year wait. The $8,000 donation from the Vodafone Festival of the Friendly North committee includes four single drums, one brass drum, and a set of four tenor drums.
Principal Epi Raikivi expressed his excitement and gratitude on behalf of the 14-member band, made up of hostel students from Years Nine to 13, representing 11 villages. He recalled that the Fiji Police Force had donated a drum set in 2008, which the school has been maintaining ever since.
Mr. Raikivi also recognized Master Seru Tuidravutu, who has been with the band since 2012 and was instrumental in securing this assistance from the festival committee. He noted that the band has been part of the festival entertainment for the past five years, despite the recent resignation of their teacher, whose leadership was pivotal in obtaining the much-needed equipment.
Located approximately 33 kilometers from Labasa Town, the band, dressed in light blue and navy blue uniforms, regularly supports other schools, organizations, and community events with their performances.
Zaheen Ibrahim, president of the Vodafone Festival of the Friendly North Committee, emphasized the festival’s commitment to community service and music education. She stated that this donation reflects their dedication to community development and skill enhancement. Ms. Ibrahim also mentioned that the festival had previously contributed $5,000 worth of equipment last year, along with an additional $3,000 in this latest initiative as part of their ongoing commitment.
