Nabala Secondary School, the only institution with a drum band in the Northern Division, has finally upgraded its musical instruments after 16 years. The $8,000 contribution, which includes four single drums, one brass drum, and a set of four tenor drums, was provided by the Vodafone Festival of the Friendly North committee.
Principal Epi Raikivi expressed his joy and gratitude on behalf of the band, composed of 14 hostel students from Years Nine to 13, who represent 11 different villages. “In 2008, the Fiji Police Force donated their drum set to our school, and since then, we have been repairing and reusing it,” Mr. Raikivi remarked. He also acknowledged Master Seru Tuidravutu’s efforts, who has been with the band since 2012 and played a key role in seeking support from the festival committee.
“The band has been part of the festival entertainment for five years,” he added. Although the teacher resigned earlier this year, his leadership was crucial in obtaining the necessary equipment. Nabala Secondary is situated about 33 kilometers from Labasa Town.
The band’s members, clad in light blue and navy blue uniforms, often perform for other schools, organizations, and community events. Zaheen Ibrahim, president of the Vodafone Festival of the Friendly North Committee, emphasized the festival’s commitment to supporting community and music education. “This donation highlights our dedication to community development, skill enhancement, and music education,” Ms. Ibrahim stated. She also mentioned that the festival had previously allocated $5,000 worth of equipment last year, with an additional $3,000 provided in the latest donation as part of their ongoing commitment.
