Nabala Secondary School, the sole institution with a drum band in the Northern Division, has finally upgraded its musical equipment after a 16-year wait. The Vodafone Festival of the Friendly North committee made an $8,000 donation that includes four single drums, one brass drum, and a set of four tenor drums.
Principal Epi Raikivi expressed enthusiasm and gratitude on behalf of the 14-member band, which consists of hostel students from Years Nine to 13, representing 11 villages. Raikivi noted that the school had been using a drum set donated by the Fiji Police Force in 2008, which had since required ongoing repairs.
He also recognized Master Seru Tuidravutu, who had been part of the band since 2012 and played a key role in securing funds from the festival committee. The band has participated in the festival entertainment group for five years. Despite the resignation of their teacher earlier this year, Tuidravutu’s leadership was vital in obtaining the new equipment.
Nabala Secondary School is situated approximately 33 kilometers from Labasa Town. The band, adorned in light blue and navy blue uniforms, regularly performs to support other schools, organizations, and community events.
Zaheen Ibrahim, president of the Vodafone Festival of the Friendly North Committee, emphasized the festival’s commitment to community and music education. She mentioned that this donation reflects their dedication to community development and skill enhancement, with the festival having previously provided $5,000 worth of equipment last year and an additional $3,000 in this latest donation as part of their ongoing support.
