Nabala Secondary School, the sole institution featuring a drum band in the Northern Division, has finally upgraded its musical equipment after a 16-year wait. The Vodafone Festival of the Friendly North committee donated $8,000, which includes four single drums, one brass drum, and a set of four tenor drums.
Principal Epi Raikivi expressed his excitement and gratitude on behalf of the 14-member band, made up of hostel students from Years Nine to 13, representing 11 villages. He noted that since receiving a drum set from the Fiji Police Force in 2008, the school has been relying on repairs and maintenance of that set.
Mr. Raikivi also recognized Master Seru Tuidravutu, who has been with the band since 2012 and played a key role in securing support from the festival committee. The band has participated in festival entertainment for the past five years, and despite a recent resignation of their teacher, his leadership was vital in obtaining the new equipment.
Located approximately 33 kilometers from Labasa Town, the band, which wears light blue and navy blue uniforms, regularly performs for other schools, organizations, and community events.
Zaheen Ibrahim, the president of the Vodafone Festival of the Friendly North Committee, emphasized the festival’s commitment to community and music education. She stated, “This donation underscores our dedication to community development, skill enhancement, and support for music education,” highlighting that last year the festival provided $5,000 worth of equipment, with an additional $3,000 included in this latest donation as part of their ongoing commitment.
