Authorities are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the recent discovery of syringes that washed ashore at Rifle Range in Vatuwaqa, Suva. The syringes were found intact in their packaging by a resident, Pita Simpson’s brother, during a walk with their dogs on Tuesday.
Concerned about the implications of the find, Mr. Simpson, a professional photographer, promptly alerted the police and went to document the scene. He expressed his worries amid ongoing drug-related issues in the area, recalling how his brother casually mentioned the syringes. “He told me there’s a lot of syringes over there, and it made me wonder about their origin,” Mr. Simpson stated.
The police have yet to determine whether the syringes are linked to drug use. Acting Commissioner of Police Sakeo Raikaci acknowledged the seriousness of the situation, indicating that efforts are underway to trace the syringes’ source. Additionally, there have been concerns regarding the safety protocols observed by officers who collected the syringes, as they did so without proper protective equipment.
Commissioner Raikaci assured that reminders have been sent to all police divisions regarding safety measures when handling such hazardous items. He also called upon pharmaceutical companies to monitor the sale of syringes more closely, highlighting the accessibility issues that contribute to the ongoing drug crisis.
