Mystery of the Abandoned Newborn: A Shocking Discovery by Local Children

Three children made a heartbreaking discovery in Suva when they found the body of a newborn baby girl abandoned in a creek on May 7, 1997. The incident took place around 8:30 AM behind the Wailada Industrial Subdivision in Lami, as reported.

The children—Niko Verekauta, 10, Kini Murimurivalu, 8, and Peni Verekauta, 12—initially mistook the newborn for a doll. Upon closer inspection, they realized the infant was alive but unresponsive and shivering. They rushed to find adults for help, but tragically, by the time they returned shortly after, the baby had already passed away.

The baby was found wrapped in red trousers and a white shirt, with visible signs of blood on her body. Furthermore, the placenta was discovered discarded nearby, just half a meter from the infant. Quick action from local villagers led to security personnel at a nearby terminal being contacted, who then notified the police.

Authorities confirmed the baby was full-term and likely abandoned shortly after birth. Investigations are underway to locate her mother, who may need medical assistance. While charges against the mother could be a possibility, the priority remains to identify and assist her to ensure she receives the necessary care.

This tragic event underscores severe concerns regarding child welfare and community responsibility. It highlights the urgent need for increased awareness and support systems for vulnerable individuals. Recent cases involving abandoned infants reinforce the critical importance of community vigilance in preventing such incidents.

Despite the sadness of this event, there is hope that the community’s response will foster a stronger commitment to child welfare. This incident serves as a reminder of the need for unity and proactive measures that create a safer environment for all, promoting a culture of protection and care for the most vulnerable in society. The ongoing investigations offer a chance for accountability and improved support mechanisms that can prevent similar tragedies in the future.
