Mystery of Children Contracting HIV: A Call for Community Action

Children diagnosed with HIV/AIDS after sharing blood or engaging in risky behaviors are undergoing rehabilitation at Lautoka Hospital. Minister for Women, Children, and Social Protection, Lynda Tabuya, confirmed that families of these children have reached out for assistance.

Tabuya reported, “I learned about several children at Lautoka Hospital who contracted HIV/AIDS through blood sharing, which is often referred to as ‘bluetoothing,’ involving drug-infused blood.” She emphasized the rehabilitation efforts being undertaken at the hospital.

The minister noted the importance of confidentiality regarding the children’s identities, as mandated by law. She expressed concern for the families who have come forward, highlighting the unfortunate circumstances that led to the children’s diagnoses.

Tabuya urged the community to take an active role in supporting their children. “We need families and communities to step up for our children. A prevention plan and strategy are essential, and we call on our community, including traditional leaders, to take responsibility for the well-being of our people.”

She also emphasized the influence of faith-based leaders, encouraging them to vocalize these issues from their pulpits, as mobilizing youth and children within their churches can create a powerful movement.
