Mysterious $80K Payment Raises Eyebrows at Fiji Sugar Corporation

The brother of a former chief executive of the Fiji Sugar Corporation received an annual salary of $80,000, according to Minister for Sugar Charan Jeath Singh. This information was provided by the FSC board, as Singh stated during an address to farmers in Bucaisau, near Labasa Town.

Singh mentioned that the individual traveled from South Africa to Fiji for a holiday and that there was uncertainty regarding his role within the FSC. He criticized the hiring process, pointing out that no advertisement was published for the position.

“There was no advertisement put out in the media for the post,” Singh noted, emphasizing that he was unclear about the man’s specific job responsibilities, as none were outlined. He described the job as lacking purpose, stating, “His job was to muck around.”

Additionally, he revealed that the FSC reimbursed the man’s airfare from South Africa to Fiji. Singh indicated that he learned this information from the board and expressed his intent to await further direction from them before considering reporting the issue to the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption. He remarked, “I cannot do it by myself.”
