A new project proposed by Elon Musk’s SpaceX in collaboration with the U.S. Air Force, aims to test hypersonic rocket cargo deliveries at Johnston Atoll, a wildlife refuge in the Pacific Ocean. Concerns have been raised by biologists and wildlife experts regarding the potential impact on the atoll’s delicate seabird populations. The atoll is home to about a million seabirds, including 14 species of tropical birds such as red-tailed tropicbirds and great frigatebirds, which have seen significant population recovery since the site was designated a protected area.

Biologists warn that the planned rocket landings could disturb nesting seabirds, leading to anxiety among the birds that could result in them abandoning their nests. The project, which includes constructing landing pads and executing multiple rocket re-entries over a four-year period, poses a direct threat to these bird species, whose survival heavily relies on the stability of their nesting environment.

Concerns are heightened due to past incidents where SpaceX launches adversely affected bird populations, notably leading to legal issues after a launch in Texas destroyed shorebird nests.
