A new project proposed by Elon Musk’s SpaceX in collaboration with the U.S. Air Force, aims to test hypersonic rocket cargo deliveries at Johnston Atoll, a wildlife refuge in the Pacific Ocean. The atoll is home to about a million seabirds, including 14 species of tropical birds such as red-tailed tropicbirds and great frigatebirds, which have seen significant population recovery since the site was designated a protected area.
Biologists warn that the planned rocket landings could disturb nesting seabirds, leading to anxiety among the birds that could result in them abandoning their nests.
