The streets of Labasa Town were vibrant with excitement yesterday as the Washington Tin Band launched a spirited performance, creating a festive atmosphere for the community following the cancellation of the New Year’s street party in the Northern Division. This 13-member band, hailing from Lami Village in Suva, entertained the crowd with energetic tunes crafted from everyday materials like empty drums, tins, sticks, and containers, drawing passersby outside Dutt’s Shoe World and Chinatown Shops.

Band leader Mosese Ravadra shared that their entertainment tour kicked off earlier in the week in Bua, with plans to spend several days in Labasa visiting local villages before heading to Savusavu and Taveuni. “Our purpose is to wish everyone a happy New Year through our music,” he stated, noting that this marks their second consecutive year of traveling from Viti Levu to Vanua Levu to spread joy during the New Year festivities.

During their lively performances, a tin is placed among the musicians to invite contributions from spectators. Ravadra explained that the proceeds would support band members, particularly students, with back-to-school expenses. “There’s no fixed amount; whatever the generous people of the friendly North bless us with will be used for our children, who have sacrificed their time to perform during this tour,” he said.

Additionally, a younger group of band members is sharing the New Year spirit with performances on the streets of Suva. Ravadra emphasized their mission to bring joy to everyone, stating, “Our goal is to include everyone in this celebration.”

The Washington Tin Band’s initiative harmoniously merges entertainment with vital community support, providing a meaningful start to the year for families in the North and beyond. Their efforts not only elevate the festive spirit but also strengthen community bonds, reminding everyone of the essential role that music plays in fostering joy and unity.

As communities come together to celebrate and support local artists, the Washington Tin Band’s initiative serves as a beacon of hope and positivity, showcasing how collaborative efforts can enhance the overall well-being of families and create a nurturing environment for future generations.
