Music with a Mission: How a Tin Band is Changing Lives in Lami

Spread the love

The next time you come across a spontaneous tin band, known as qiri kava, on the streets, consider giving a small donation. Your contribution could provide food for someone in need, clothing, or even assist a young individual in pursuing their education.

Not all street performances are merely for entertainment; some aim to make a meaningful difference. A notable example is the Washington Tin Band from Waigasa in Lami, which has been actively touring Lami and Suva since New Year’s Day, spreading joy and purpose through their music.

The band leader, Irame Ratulele, highlights that this initiative plays a crucial role in redirecting youth, especially boys, away from crime and drug use. “Most of our members are students, unemployed, or come from low-income families,” Ratulele shares. On a good day, the band can gather up to $800 in donations, which they collect from performance venues outside shopping centers and busy public areas.

The funds are distributed thoughtfully: 10% is donated to their village church, a portion supports the club, and the remaining amount is shared among members to assist their families. Additionally, some of the money goes toward educational needs, such as school fees and supplies for secondary and tertiary students.

Hailing from an area once troubled by crime, the existence of the band has positively transformed lives. Ratulele emphasizes the importance of promoting education and good job opportunities among young members to combat substance abuse and crime. He points out the regrets of senior members who neglected their education, stressing the need for the youth to aspire for a better future.

The band’s impactful contributions were acknowledged last year when they won the Showcase Tin Band competition in Suva, reflecting their dedication and talent in driving positive change.

This article underscores the power of community initiatives in fostering hope and transforming lives for the better. By supporting local art and culture, we contribute to a brighter future, not just for the individuals involved but for society as a whole.
