Motikiai Murray, a former student of Ratu Kadavulevu School and open-side flanker for the Fijian Drua, is looking forward to an exciting season ahead. The 21-year-old from Lovoni, Ovalau in Lomaiviti has begun light training as he recovers from ankle surgery he underwent a few months ago in Sydney, Australia. He also has maternal ties to Nukuni-i-cake, Ono I Lau.
Murray is currently focused on his rehabilitation and has been preparing well for the upcoming season. While he has not yet started running, he hopes to join field sessions soon.
He made his debut for the Drua last June during the Super Rugby Pacific quarterfinal against the Crusaders. Murray is benefiting from the mentorship of senior players on his team and is eager to make his debut for the Flying Fijians.
Growing up, he found inspiration in Flying Fijian flanker Levani Botia, whom he admires for his strength in defense and breakdown skills. Murray aspires to emulate Botia’s playing style.
“It feels good to be playing alongside my teammates. I used to watch them play rugby league, sevens, and for the Flying Fijians,” he shared. “Playing with them is exciting, and my main focus is to stay fit and give my best during the season.”
Murray is patiently waiting for the right opportunity to wear the national jersey. He mentioned that he would also be open to playing at number 8 if the chance arises. Over the last two seasons, he has played in six matches for the Drua.
