Anare Vuli Cilicewa, who is facing a murder charge, has decided to withdraw his bail application as he awaits a psychiatric evaluation report from Saint Giles Psychiatric Hospital. Cilicewa appeared in the High Court in Suva before Justice Pita Bulamainaivalu to address the single count of murder related to the death of Sabreen Shahib Ali on September 9 in Raiwaqa, Suva.
During the proceedings, Cilicewa’s attorney, Manisha Singh, explained that they had not submitted the bail application because they needed the psychiatric report to better understand Cilicewa’s condition in light of the charges against him. She noted that the principal medical officer at Saint Giles required knowledge of the specifics of the charges in order to conduct a thorough assessment.
Justice Bulamainaivalu emphasized the importance of maintaining the confidentiality of the disclosures and advised Ms. Singh to meet with Doctor Kiran Gaikwad to provide necessary information without compromising the doctor-patient confidentiality.
State Prosecutor Zenith Zunaid mentioned that the police were in the process of preparing additional disclosures. He also confirmed that the autopsy report indicated evidence of strangling and choking, which are crucial details in the ongoing case.
The court has adjourned the matter until December 3, when they will review the psychiatric report, the photographic booklet from the crime scene, and the autopsy results.
This situation underscores the importance of mental health evaluations in legal proceedings, aiming to ensure that all parties receive fair treatment within the judicial system. As the case progresses, it is hoped that justice will prevail while safeguarding the rights and mental health of those involved.
