Anare Vuli Cilicewa, who is facing a murder charge, has decided to withdraw his bail application while awaiting a psychiatric evaluation from Saint Giles Psychiatric Hospital. Cilicewa appeared in the High Court in Suva yesterday, facing a single count of murder connected to the death of Sabreen Shahib Ali on September 9 in Raiwaqa, Suva.
During the court proceedings, Cilicewa’s attorney, Manisha Singh, informed Justice Pita Bulamainaivalu that they were postponing the bail application due to the pending psychiatric report. She indicated that the principal medical officer at St. Giles needed to understand the details of the charges in order to conduct a thorough assessment, emphasizing the importance of maintaining confidentiality about the specifics of the case.
Justice Bulamainaivalu advised Ms. Singh to meet with Dr. Kiran Gaikwad, the psychiatrist, to provide the necessary information without compromising the integrity of the disclosures made during the trial. Additionally, State Prosecutor Zenith Zunaid stated that the police were in the process of preparing further disclosures related to the case. He noted that the autopsy report indicated evidence of strangulation and choking.
The court has scheduled the next hearing for December 3, when updates regarding the psychiatric report, crime scene photographs, and the autopsy results will be reviewed.
This case highlights the importance of mental health evaluations in the judicial process, particularly in serious criminal matters. While the legal proceedings may be challenging for all parties involved, they also underscore a commitment to ensuring that justice is served through careful consideration of each individual’s circumstances. The goal is to achieve a fair outcome based on evidence and thorough assessments.
