A 19 by 4-meter mural focusing on conservation and sustainability was unveiled in Suva last week in celebration of World Environment Health Day. Created by local artists Jack Eastgate, Hefrani Barnes, and Mele Nabola, the mural is part of an “Art for Change” collaboration between Greenhouse Coworking and the Agence française de développement (AFD) Group.

Maria Ronna Luna Pastorizo-Sekiguchi, founder of Greenhouse Coworking and The Greenhouse Studio, expressed the belief that art and collaboration can transform communities and societies. “Using art to convey messages, transform perspectives, and motivate action is the highest form of visual storytelling,” she stated. Ms. Sekiguchi added that the AFD Group recognizes the potential of art as a catalyst for change and that they are excited to have local artists involved in this initiative.

The AFD Group is a French public organization that supports impactful projects globally, working alongside local communities while adhering to the United Nations’ 17 Sustainable Development Goals. In the Pacific, AFD emphasizes addressing climate change, enhancing the resilience of island nations, and protecting biodiversity.

Elodie Vitalis, AFD Group representative in Fiji, expressed pride in partnering with Greenhouse Coworking to raise awareness of conservation and climate change issues. “This initiative aligns perfectly with the shared values of AFD and the Pacific,” she remarked, highlighting the project’s support for training two young female artists devoted to sustainable futures for Fiji.

The vividly colored mural located at Greenhouse Coworking’s premises at the intersection of Des Voeux Rd and McGreggor Rd in Suva’s upper central business district is intended to offer a hopeful vision of a sustainable future for Fiji and the world.

Since opening in 2021, Greenhouse Coworking has aimed to display meaningful artwork on its exterior wall. They found an ideal partner in AFD, a member of their community. The Art for Change initiative will also provide the venue free of charge for the artists to conduct regular paid classes focused on using visual arts for social change.

Ms. Sekiguchi noted a vision for expanding the initiative beyond classes and murals, envisioning the transformation of Des Voeux Rd into a vibrant arts hub, incorporating locations like Mana Coffee, Alliance Française, and Baka Books. The concept includes guided art walks and events showcasing diverse creatives, including artists and performers, as part of a Night Market.
