Two recent cases of mpaisa theft have been reported in Labasa. Police disclosed that in the first incident, a 35-year-old woman from Namara allegedly withdrew $320 that had been mistakenly sent by a member of the public back in March. According to police, the victim believed she was sending the money to a family friend who had requested financial assistance. However, after checking with the friend, who confirmed that no request had been made, the victim reported the matter to the police.
In a separate case, a 20-year-old man from Nabekavu has been charged with one count of obtaining financial advantage after allegedly taking $200 dishonestly. The police stated that the victim sent the money in response to a Facebook advertisement for a phone that was for sale. The accused reportedly withdrew the funds and then ceased communication with the victim. Both individuals involved in these cases are set to appear in Labasa Magistrates Court today.
