Independent Member of Parliament Jone Usamate has stated that the deregistration of FijiFirst is behind them, emphasizing the importance of moving forward. He addressed the speculation surrounding the party being governed by a “two-man rule,” categorizing it as mere assumptions.
Speaking on The Lens@177, Mr. Usamate affirmed his commitment to represent all Fijians, guided by the principles of equality, meritocracy, and diversity. He expressed that these values have long been important to him and are shared by his colleagues in the Bloc of 16 within Parliament.
“What has happened has happened,” he remarked. “Currently, we are independent Members of Parliament. We will continue to perform our duties to the best of our abilities, and I believe it does not benefit me to dwell on the past.”
Mr. Usamate highlighted the necessity for the Opposition to provide alternative perspectives on issues often presented by the Government in a singular manner. He outlined the responsibility of the Opposition to understand public opinion, engage with communities, and ensure the Government is informed about citizens’ concerns.
Reflecting on his political journey, Mr. Usamate noted that he initially joined as a Cabinet Minister in 2012 during military rule and subsequently became part of FijiFirst. Since last year, he has been serving in the Opposition, a role he is grateful for as it has allowed him to gain valuable experience that he believes enhances his current responsibilities.
“I prefer to look forward,” he concluded, expressing his intention to focus on present responsibilities and moving ahead constructively.
