Moving Forward: Usamate Reflects on FijiFirst’s Past

Independent MP Jone Usamate has stated that the deregistration of FijiFirst is now behind them and urged everyone to look ahead. He dismissed suggestions that the party was operating under a “two-man rule” as mere speculation.

During his appearance on The Lens@177, Usamate emphasized that he represents all Fijians in Parliament, guided by values of equality, meritocracy, and diversity—principles he has upheld for a long time and shares with his colleagues in the Bloc of 16.

“What has happened has happened,” Usamate remarked. “Currently, we are independent Members of Parliament. We do our best in fulfilling our roles, and reflecting on past events doesn’t benefit me in any way.”

He advocated for moving forward to enhance their contribution as an effective Opposition, providing alternative viewpoints and critiquing the government when necessary. Usamate pointed out that it is the Opposition’s responsibility to gather public opinions and communicate citizens’ concerns to the Government.

He reminisced about joining as a Cabinet Minister in 2012 during military governance and later became part of FijiFirst. “I am grateful for the experiences I’ve gained since last year in the Opposition and for the opportunity to serve as a minister,” he said.

Usamate concluded by expressing his desire to concentrate on his current responsibilities and move forward.
