Independent Member of Parliament Jone Usamate has stated that the deregistration of FijiFirst is now behind us and it is time to move forward. During an appearance on The Lens@177, Usamate addressed speculations regarding a supposed “two-man rule” within the party, labeling these claims as mere assumptions.
Usamate reiterated his commitment to serving all Fijians in Parliament, rooted in principles of equality, meritocracy, and diversity. He emphasized that these values are shared by his colleagues in the Bloc of 16.
“What has happened has happened,” he remarked. “Currently, we are independent Members of Parliament. We strive to fulfill our duties to the best of our abilities, and revisiting past events does not benefit me.”
He stressed the importance of progressing and contributing positively as a strong Opposition in Parliament, providing alternative viewpoints and holding the government accountable when necessary.
Usamate pointed out that the government often presents issues in a particular light, making it essential for the Opposition to offer different perspectives. He underlined their duty to gather public opinions, engage with constituents, and communicate these concerns to the government.
Reflecting on his past, he mentioned joining the Cabinet in 2012 during a military government and subsequently becoming part of FijiFirst. Usamate expressed gratitude for the experiences he gained during his tenure as a minister, noting that they have enhanced his current effectiveness in opposition.
“I prefer not to dwell on the past. My focus is on what lies ahead,” he concluded.
