Motikiai Murray, a former student of Ratu Kadavulevu School and open-side flanker for the Fijian Drua, is looking forward to an exciting season next year. The 21-year-old from Lovoni, Ovalau, in the Lomaiviti group, is gradually resuming light training after undergoing ankle surgery in Sydney a few months ago. He has maternal ties to Nukuni-i-cake, Ono I Lau.
“I’m just focusing on my rehab and have been preparing well for the upcoming season,” said Murray. “I haven’t started running yet, but I hope to join the field sessions soon.”
Murray made his debut for the Drua during a Super Rugby Pacific quarterfinal match against the Crusaders last June. He is grateful for the mentorship from senior players on the team and aspires to make his debut for the Flying Fijians in the near future.
Growing up, he drew inspiration from Flying Fijian flanker Levani Botia and aims to emulate his defensive skills and effectiveness at the breakdown. “Botia is strong in both defense and breakdown, and I loved watching him. Hopefully, I’ll be that player one day,” he said.
Murray added that playing alongside experienced brothers in the rugby community has been thrilling for him, noting that he has admired their performances in rugby league, sevens, and the Flying Fijians. “My main focus is to stay fit and be the best I can during the season,” he stated.
He expressed his eagerness to wear the national jersey when the time is right and mentioned that he is also open to playing at number 8 if given the chance. In total, Murray has played six matches for the Drua across the last two seasons.
