The mother of a 21-year-old inmate serving a two-year sentence at Natabua Prison in Lautoka is urging authorities to provide her son with medical treatment following an alleged beating by corrections officers. Preferring to remain anonymous, the mother revealed that her son was among several inmates reportedly assaulted last weekend, sparking concerns for his well-being.

The issue came to light when the inmate’s father received alarming information through a call from someone inside the prison, prompting further inquiry into the situation. The mother insists her son was wrongfully accused, stating, “My son was badly beaten up by the corrections officers,” emphasizing her belief in his innocence regarding the alleged incident that led to the assault.

There are further claims from the mother suggesting that another prisoner has died within the facility, raising alarm over prisoner conditions. In response, Fiji Corrections Commissioner Dr. Jalesi Nakarawa acknowledged reports of the assault incident, stating that the inmate had been medically examined and returned to the facility without serious injuries, as per a report he received. Dr. Nakarawa has initiated an investigation into the incident and has called for a comprehensive report from supervising officers in the region.

Dr. Nakarawa has categorically denied allegations surrounding a death in the prison, aiming to clarify the facts amidst the distress.

This situation highlights the critical importance of ensuring the humane treatment of inmates, safeguarding their health and well-being. As investigations proceed, there is hope that transparency and accountability within the corrections system will be reinforced, ultimately leading to improved conditions for all inmates.

In summary, the allegations of inmate mistreatment are taken seriously by the authorities, who have promised a thorough investigation. This situation serves to remind us of the need for ongoing oversight within the prison system to safeguard the rights and health of inmates, with hopes for meaningful improvements stemming from this incident.
