Mother’s Heartache: Demands Answers After Son’s Tragic Job Site Death

A heartbroken mother is seeking answers from her son’s employer following his tragic death at a work site in Suva. Anit Anitesh Ram, who lived in Vunivau and worked for Energy Fiji Limited (EFL), reportedly suffered a fatal electric shock while on duty on Tuesday.

Puspha Wati, Ram’s mother, received a call from EFL around 9:22 AM notifying her that her son had been taken to Oceania Hospital after the incident. The Ram family is mourning the loss of their primary provider.

“I quickly tried to arrange a flight from Labasa to Suva to check on Anit’s condition, but after an hour, I received a call from my relatives telling me he had passed away,” Ms. Wati stated. She expressed frustration over her unsuccessful attempts to reach her son’s supervisor and the lack of communication from EFL regarding the incident.

Ms. Wati insists that her son would not have acted carelessly at work and is demanding clarity from EFL. “Usually, EFL is prompt in sending out notices about power outages, including the same day my son died when a shutdown caused an early end to a Parliament session. Yet, they do not inform families about the loss of their staff in a timely manner,” she remarked.

An email seeking a comment from EFL about the incident had not been answered by the time this report was published. Ms. Wati mentioned that Ram joined EFL in November and had sought to transfer to be nearer to his family.

“My husband and I are unwell, and recently Anit reassured us not to worry about anything, promising he would return soon,” said the 45-year-old mother. She added that Ram celebrated his 26th birthday on August 11 and shared his excitement about participating in the Labasa Sanatan soccer tournament during their last conversation the day before his death.

“We worked hard for many years to raise a child who could provide for us in our old age, but now we have lost everything.”

Police spokesperson Ana Naisoro reported that Ram was found lifeless and is believed to have been electrocuted, but authorities are awaiting the results of a post-mortem examination to formally determine the cause of death.
