A mother is seeking answers from her son’s employer following his tragic death at a worksite in Suva. Anit Anitesh Ram, a Vunivau resident and employee of Energy Fiji Limited (EFL), reportedly suffered a fatal electric shock while on duty on Tuesday.

His mother, Puspha Wati, was informed by EFL at approximately 9:22 AM that Ram had been taken to Oceania Hospital due to the incident. The family is heartbroken over the loss of their primary provider.

Describing her frantic attempts to reach her son, Ms. Wati said, “I quickly tried to arrange a flight from Labasa to Suva to check on Anit’s condition, but after an hour, I received a call from my relatives informing me that he had passed away.” She expressed frustration at being unable to contact her son’s supervisor and receiving no communication from EFL regarding the incident.

She believes her son would never have neglected safety protocols while at work and is demanding transparency from EFL. “EFL is usually prompt in sending out notifications about power outages, including the one on the same day my son died, which affected a Parliament session’s timing. However, when it comes to informing families about a tragic loss, they remain silent,” she stated.

An email sent to EFL requesting comment on the situation received no response by the time of publication.

Ms. Wati shared that Ram joined EFL in November of the previous year and had sought a transfer to be nearer to family. “My husband and I are not in good health, and recently Anit reassured us that we shouldn’t worry because he would return soon,” the 45-year-old mother recalled.

She noted that Ram celebrated his 26th birthday on August 11 and was excited about participating in the Labasa Sanatan soccer tournament during their last conversation the day before his death.

“We devoted years to raising our son with the hope that he would take care of us in our old age, but now we feel like we’ve lost everything,” she lamented.

Police spokesperson Ana Naisoro confirmed that Ram was found lifeless and is believed to have died from electrocution, although she mentioned that authorities are awaiting post-mortem results to establish the exact cause of death.
