A mother is seeking answers from her son’s employer after he tragically died while working at a job site in Suva. Anit Anitesh Ram, who resided in Vunivau and was employed by Energy Fiji Limited (EFL), reportedly suffered a fatal electric shock on Tuesday.
Puspha Wati, his mother, received a call from EFL at around 9:22 AM, notifying her that Ram had been taken to Oceania Hospital following the incident. The family is mourning the loss of their only provider.
“I quickly tried to arrange a flight from Labasa to Suva to check on Anit’s condition, but after an hour, I received a call from my relatives informing me that he had passed away,” Ms. Wati stated.
She expressed frustration over her attempts to reach her son’s supervisor with no success and noted the lack of communication from EFL regarding the incident. Ms. Wati insisted that her son would never have acted recklessly at work and is demanding transparency from EFL.
“Typically, EFL is quick to issue advisory messages about power outages, including one on the same day my son died when there was a power shutdown in Suva that cut short a Parliament session. However, when it comes to informing families about their staff’s deaths, they fail to communicate,” she claimed.
An email sent to EFL for a comment on the situation received no response by the time this article was prepared. Ms. Wati noted that Ram had joined EFL in November of the previous year and was seeking a transfer to be closer to his family.
“My husband and I are not well, and recently Anit reassured us not to worry about anything, promising that he would return soon,” the 45-year-old mother shared. She added that Ram celebrated his 26th birthday on August 11 and was excited about his upcoming participation in the Labasa Sanatan soccer tournament during their last conversation the day before his death.
“We dedicated many years to raising him to have a good life and take care of us as we age, but now we have lost everything,” she lamented.
Police spokesperson Ana Naisoro stated that Ram was discovered motionless and is believed to have been electrocuted. However, she indicated that the police are waiting for the post-mortem results to confirm the exact cause of death.
