The Civic Centre in Suva recently served as a lively venue for the Chinese Mid-Autumn Festival, also known as the Moon Festival, celebrated on Tuesday. This event, organized by the Chinese community in Fiji, showcased a variety of captivating performances, fostering cross-cultural friendships.
The Mid-Autumn Festival occurs on the 14th day of the 8th month of the traditional Chinese lunar calendar and is a time for family gatherings and expressing gratitude for the harvest. This year, families came together under the full moon, either in person or in spirit, to appreciate its beauty and partake in traditions associated with the festival. The event was an opportunity for the local community to engage in shared cultural experiences while celebrating Chinese heritage.
Co-hosted by the Chinese Embassy in Fiji, the Chinese Cultural Centre, and the Department of Culture and Tourism from Hubei Province in China, the evening’s festivities were part of the “Mid-Autumn Festival – A Moon to Remember” campaign. This initiative aims to promote the festival’s themes of unity, gratitude, and cultural diversity around the world.
The program titled “Experience Hubei’s Performance in Fiji – A Melodious Bridge of Friendship” featured a mix of local and international talent, including 17 performers from Fiji. The performances encompassed traditional dances, instrumental music, and acrobatics, highlighting the diverse cultural heritage of China.
A standout act was the enthralling dragon boat tune performed by renowned female artist Ruan Guanghui, whose performance set a delightful tone for the evening. Following this, Wu Lingyun, a nationally recognized artist and gold medalist from the China National Instrumental Competition, captivated the audience with “A Myriad of Horses Galloping.”
The dance performances by Peng Ziyu and Wang Rui Xue offered a visual narrative, bringing to life stories and traditions from China. Another highlight was the impressive acrobatic display titled “STRENGTH,” performed by award-winning artists Hou Meng Yang and Bai Shi Yang, showcasing their remarkable skills.
Hibiscus contestant Miss Fiji Fashion Week Pepe Malani also participated with a heartfelt rendition of “Ave Maria,” blending local and Chinese cultures. This moment beautifully illustrated the festival’s spirit of appreciation for diverse traditions.
The night featured an entertaining magic show called “Enhancing Handcrafts – Yearly Abundance” by internationally acclaimed magician Wu Songtao, whose tricks engaged the audience while celebrating craftsmanship.
As the performances flowed seamlessly, the final acts included a powerful rendition of “CHINA IN THE LIGHTS” featuring singers Yu Jingming and Hong Jingjing, among others. Their voices resonated throughout the Civic Centre, reinforcing a sense of community and connection.
Throughout the celebration, attendees reflected on the deeper meanings of the festival—the moon symbolizing family unity and gratitude for life’s harvests. Even those separated from loved ones found comfort in sharing the same moonlight, bridging distances through this common experience.
The atmosphere was filled with joy, applause, and camaraderie, as government representatives and community members celebrated not only the artistry displayed but the cultural connections formed throughout the event. The successful Mid-Autumn Festival celebration reinforced the value of cultural festivals in promoting understanding and appreciation among diverse communities.
As the evening came to a close, the memories of the performances lingered, encapsulating the essence of cultural exchange and the friendships it cultivates. This gathering was more than a celebration; it was an affirmation of humanity—a night of joy, creativity, and the promise of ongoing cross-cultural friendships.
