The Civic Centre in Suva was alive with festivities on Tuesday as it hosted a jubilant celebration of the Chinese Mid-Autumn Festival, also referred to as the Moon Festival. Organized by the Chinese community in Fiji, the event showcased a variety of captivating performances that fostered cultural ties.
The Mid-Autumn Festival, observed on the 14th day of the 8th month of the traditional Chinese lunar calendar, is a meaningful occasion for family gatherings and expressing gratitude for the harvest. This year, families, whether together or apart, admired the full moon’s radiance and participated in the festival’s time-honored traditions. The gathering at the Civic Centre celebrated Chinese heritage while inviting the local community to join in a shared cultural experience.
Co-hosted by the Chinese Embassy in Fiji, the Chinese Cultural Centre, and the Department of Culture and Tourism of Hubei Province in China, the event was part of the “Mid-Autumn Festival – A Moon to Remember” initiative, which aims to promote themes of unity, gratitude, and cultural diversity globally.
The program, titled “Experience Hubei’s Performance in Fiji – A Melodious Bridge of Friendship,” featured both local and international talent, including 17 performers from Fiji. The various acts included traditional dances, musical performances, and acrobatics, all highlighting China’s vibrant cultural heritage.
One of the evening’s highlights was a mesmerizing dragon boat tune performed by Ruan Guanghui, a renowned female artist known for her musical talent. This performance set a joyful tone, embodying the festival’s spirit with enchanting melodies that resonated with the audience.
Additionally, the audience was treated to “A Myriad of Horses Galloping,” a performance by Wu Lingyun, a recognized national performer and gold medalist in the China National Instrumental Competition. The music transported listeners through the expansive landscapes of China.
Dance was a prominent feature of the celebration, with Peng Ziyu and Wang Rui Xue leading a visual storytelling experience that showcased the richness and diversity of Chinese traditions. Another captivating performance was the acrobatics display titled “STRENGTH,” presented by Hou Meng Yang and Bai Shi Yang, both of whom have achieved accolades in international competitions, leaving the audience in awe of their skill.
The cultural exchange further included a heartfelt performance by Pepe Malani, a contestant in the Hibiscus pageant, who beautifully sang “Ave Maria,” blending Fijian and Chinese traditions. Her performance underscored the essence of the Mid-Autumn Festival—appreciating and celebrating each other’s cultures.
The program also featured an engaging magic show titled “Enhancing Handcrafts – Yearly Abundance,” performed by internationally acclaimed magician Wu Songtao. His performance not only entertained but also celebrated creativity and craftsmanship, aligning perfectly with the festival’s themes of unity and diverse artistic expression.
As the evening unfolded, the series of performances seamlessly blended into a vibrant tapestry of sounds and movements that resonated with attendees. The event culminated in a powerful rendition of “CHINA IN THE LIGHTS,” featuring singers Yu Jingming and Hong Jingjing, whose voices filled the Civic Centre and fostered a sense of collective belonging.
