The Civic Centre in Suva recently became a lively venue for the celebration of the Chinese Mid-Autumn Festival, commonly referred to as the Moon Festival, which took place on Tuesday. This event, organized by the Chinese community in Fiji, showcased a vibrant mix of performances that fostered cultural connection and friendship.
The Mid-Autumn Festival occurs on the 14th day of the 8th month of the traditional Chinese lunar calendar, a time when families celebrate together, express gratitude for the harvest, and admire the full moon. This year, families gathered together, either in person or in spirit, to participate in the festival’s cherished customs. The Civic Centre event served not only as a tribute to Chinese culture but also as an invitation for the local community to join in this cultural experience.
Co-hosted by the Chinese Embassy in Fiji, the Chinese Cultural Centre, and the Department of Culture and Tourism of Hubei Province, the event was part of the “Mid-Autumn Festival – A Moon to Remember” campaign. This initiative aims to share the festival’s values globally, emphasizing unity, gratitude, and cultural diversity.
The program, titled “Experience Hubei’s Performance in Fiji – A Melodious Bridge of Friendship,” included a mix of local and international talent, featuring 17 performers from Fiji. The diverse range of acts encompassed traditional dances, musical performances, and acrobatic displays, all emphasizing China’s rich cultural legacy.
A standout moment was the dragon boat tune performed by renowned artist Ruan Guanghui, whose enchanting melodies resonated with the audience and highlighted the spirit of the festival. Following this, Wu Lingyun, a celebrated instrumentalist, led an ensemble in “A Myriad of Horses Galloping,” captivating listeners with evocative sounds that transported them through the landscapes of China.
Dance was integral to the festivities, with Peng Ziyu and Wang Rui Xue captivating attendees through performances that portrayed the elegance and richness of Chinese stories and traditions. Another notable highlight was the acrobatic routine “STRENGTH,” presented by acclaimed performers Hou Meng Yang and Bai Shi Yang, whose skill amazed the audience and showcased the dedication behind this timeless art.
The celebration also featured a heartfelt musical performance by Miss Fiji Fashion Week contestant Pepe Malani, who brought a local touch to the event with her rendition of “Ave Maria.” This performance underscored the essence of the Mid-Autumn Festival, emphasizing the appreciation of diverse traditions.
Additionally, an enthralling magic show entitled “Enhancing Handcrafts – Yearly Abundance,” performed by internationally recognized magician Wu Songtao, engaged the audience and illustrated the wonders of creativity and craftsmanship, further promoting the festival’s themes of unity and artistic diversity.
As the evening progressed, the seamless flow of performances created an immersive atmosphere, culminating in a stirring finale with “CHINA IN THE LIGHTS.” Singers Yu Jingming and Hong Jingjing delivered a powerful performance, instilling a sense of community and togetherness among attendees.
