The Civic Centre in Suva celebrated the Chinese Mid-Autumn Festival, also known as the Moon Festival, on Tuesday, turning the space into a colorful and lively gathering organized by the Chinese community in Fiji. This culturally significant event featured a variety of captivating performances aimed at fostering friendship between different cultures.
The Mid-Autumn Festival, observed on the 14th day of the 8th month in the traditional Chinese lunar calendar, is a time for family reunions and expressing gratitude for the harvest. As families gathered, either in person or in spirit, in appreciation of the full, bright moon, they engaged in customary activities associated with the festival. The celebration at the Civic Centre not only honored Chinese heritage but also invited the local community to share in this cultural experience.
Co-hosted by the Chinese Embassy in Fiji, the Chinese Cultural Centre, and the Department of Culture and Tourism of Hubei Province in China, the evening was part of the “Mid-Autumn Festival – A Moon to Remember” initiative, which aims to promote the festival’s messages of unity, gratitude, and cultural diversity worldwide.
The program, titled “Experience Hubei’s Performance in Fiji – A Melodious Bridge of Friendship,” featured both international and local talents, showcasing 17 performers from Fiji. The performances included traditional dances, instrumental music, and acrobatics, highlighting the richness of Chinese culture.
A standout moment of the evening was the enchanting “Dragon Boat Tune” performed by Ruan Guanghui, an acclaimed female artist known for her musical talent. This performance, along with “A Myriad of Horses Galloping” featuring gold medalist Wu Lingyun, captivated the audience with melodic sounds that transported them to the vast landscapes of China.
Dance performances led by dancers Peng Ziyu and Wang Rui Xue illustrated the beauty and diversity of Chinese traditions. Additionally, an impressive acrobatic display titled “STRENGTH,” performed by award-winning acrobats Hou Meng Yang and Bai Shi Yang, showcased the discipline intrinsic to this ancient art form.
Adding a local touch to the celebration, Hibiscus contestant Miss Fiji Fashion Week Pepe Malani performed a soulful rendition of “Ave Maria,” symbolizing the connection between Chinese and Fijian cultures. This moment encapsulated the spirit of the Mid-Autumn Festival—an appreciation of diverse traditions coming together.
The evening also featured a mesmerizing magic show by internationally recognized magician Wu Songtao, whose performance not only entertained the audience but also celebrated craftsmanship and creativity. The finale included an inspiring performance of “CHINA IN THE LIGHTS” featuring singers Yu Jingming and Hong Jingjing, whose powerful voices filled the Civic Centre, fostering a sense of community and connection among attendees.
