Monitoring Global ‘Monkeypox’ Situation: Health Ministry’s Latest Update

The Ministry of Health and Medical Services has announced that they are closely monitoring the global situation regarding monkeypox.

In a response to Fiji One News, the Health Ministry cited the World Health Organization, noting that monkeypox was declared a global health emergency in May 2023 and remains present in several regions, including parts of Australia.

To prevent the disease from entering Fiji, the government has implemented specific protocols and guidelines. These include routine health screenings at international borders and a 21-day incubation period to facilitate the early detection of any cases, even though no local cases have been reported so far.

The Ministry of Health emphasizes the importance of maintaining surveillance and the ability to adapt as necessary. However, they also stress the critical need to manage any associated stigma effectively.
