Monica Ting is a committed young woman dedicated to helping others and achieving her goals. At just 22, she has already embarked on a significant journey of self-discovery, underscored by her recent graduation from the University of the South Pacific.
Coming from a large family with ten siblings, Ms. Ting drew inspiration from her hardworking parents. Her father, a farmer, and her mother, a dedicated housewife, nurtured her ambitions from a young age. Growing up in Labasa, the only holiday destination was their family’s farm in Savusavu, which played a crucial role in her upbringing.
From an early age, Ms. Ting was motivated by her father, who promised a trip to Suva for the sibling with the best grades. Seizing this opportunity, she worked diligently to come first in her class. After graduating from St. John’s College in Cawaci, Ovalau, she set her sights on higher education, initially contemplating a career in teaching before shifting her focus to medicine. She applied to both Fiji National University for a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery and to the University of the South Pacific for a Bachelor of Science.
Although faced with challenges regarding her admission, she chose to attend the University of the South Pacific, reaffirming her belief that everything happens for a reason. Her university journey was not without difficulties, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic. Not only did she adapt to online learning while back in Vanualevu, but tragedy struck when her family home was lost in a fire. With the support of her cousin, Dr. Maria Ting, she persevered, attributing her strength to prayer and faith.
Graduating brought a whirlwind of emotions. Even though her parents couldn’t attend, she was surrounded by the support of her three brothers and sister-in-law, along with close friends who shared in her educational journey. Looking ahead, Ms. Ting envisions herself working in a laboratory or classroom and dreams of traveling the world.
Her advice to the younger generation highlights the importance of understanding the principles that guide decision-making, encouraging prioritization of God above all else.
Monica Ting’s story is a testament to resilience and determination. Her journey not only inspires fellow students but also showcases the power of hard work and faith in overcoming life’s challenges. With her future bright and aspirations clear, she exemplifies the potential that lies within each of us to pursue our dreams despite adversity.
