Monica Ting, a dedicated 22-year-old, exemplifies selflessness by prioritizing the needs of others over her own aspirations. Recently graduated from the University of the South Pacific, Monica is not only a student but also a member of a large family of ten siblings.
Her mother comes from Salia in the Tunuloa district of Cakaudrove, while her father has roots in Buca Village, Natewa, as well as connections to Natewa and Guangzhou, China. Growing up in Labasa, she spent numerous holidays assisting her father, a hardworking farmer, at their farm in Savusavu. A memorable moment from her childhood was a challenge from her father, who promised that the sibling who excelled academically would get to accompany him to Suva, an opportunity that Monica passionately pursued.
After attending St Johns College in Cawaci, Ovalau, she initially dreamt of becoming a teacher but later aspired to be a doctor. After high school, she applied to both Fiji National University for a medical program and the University of the South Pacific for a Bachelor of Science degree. Despite facing challenges with her admission, Monica chose to enroll at USP, believing that divine plans often lead us in unexpected directions.
Monica’s university journey was further complicated by the COVID-19 pandemic, which necessitated a shift to online classes. During this tumultuous time, she faced personal tragedy as their home was destroyed in a fire. Despite these hurdles, Monica found solace with her cousin, Dr. Maria Ting, and remained focused on her studies, crediting her faith and prayer as significant sources of strength throughout her challenges.
Graduating from university brought a wave of emotions for Monica; although her parents could not attend, the presence of her siblings and friends provided immense support on this milestone day. Looking ahead, she envisions herself teaching in a lab or classroom within the next five years, and she aspires to travel the world, marking adventures on her bucket list.
To younger generations, Monica emphasizes the importance of understanding the principles guiding one’s decisions. She advises prioritizing what truly matters in life, particularly encouraging a deep relationship with God.
This inspiring story of resilience and determination highlights that with faith, hard work, and support from loved ones, individuals can overcome obstacles and pursue their dreams. Monica Ting serves as a reminder of the potential within each person to rise above adversity while staying true to one’s values.
