American Ambassador Evelyn Teegen emphasized the critical role of leaders, parents, and educators in shaping the character of future generations that will drive change. Speaking to over 200 students at Lautoka Teachers College during the College Day celebration, she stressed the importance of individualism and understanding one’s cultural heritage.
Ms. Teegen encouraged students to explore various cultures, including those of ethnic Fijians, Indians, Chinese, Africans, and Europeans. She stated that analyzing diversity fosters a sense of strength and pride in one’s culture. Her remarks highlighted the world’s progression towards peaceful coexistence through the acknowledgment of differences.
She urged future educators to instill strong values in their students while also encouraging them to appreciate and respect diversity. The challenge for teachers, she noted, is to develop students’ potential so they can embrace new ideas without feeling that their individualism is compromised.
According to Ms. Teegen, as students’ lives evolve, they will face significant changes, and teachers must prepare them to navigate these transitions effectively while promoting hard work and perseverance. She described educators as vital in equipping students with the necessary tools for knowledge, discipline, and the capacity to implement change.
Ms. Teegen expressed that the need for leaders to meet future challenges is increasingly urgent. She recognized the profound responsibilities that come with teaching young children and remarked on the unique challenges educators face.
She emphasized that teachers should maintain a presence in their communities and act as advocates for education, especially when financial priorities threaten its status. Reminding the community that an educated individual is a valuable resource is essential, she added.
In her address, Ms. Teegen also highlighted the importance of collaboration with students’ families, stating that educators must work together to support children’s education. She noted that while parents can be strong allies, they can also present challenges; thus, frequent communication and reminders about the parents’ role in fostering a conducive learning environment are crucial.
Further, she referenced remarks from the Minister for Education, Filipe Bole, who underscored the importance of a home life that supports educational efforts. She called attention to the necessity for parents to participate actively in their children’s learning, including through parent-teacher associations.
Ms. Teegen concluded by advocating for proactive outreach efforts from teachers to engage parents, suggesting that simple gestures like phone calls or invitations to visit classrooms can enhance parental involvement.
