The Ministry of Employment is currently looking into a situation concerning a group of Bangladeshi migrant workers who have reportedly left their jobs without notice. Agni Deo Singh, the Minister for Employment, has confirmed these reports and indicated that the investigation is being hampered by the workers’ absence.
Singh mentioned that there have been allegations of mistreatment, but the lack of contact with the workers is making it difficult to thoroughly address these claims. He emphasized the Ministry’s commitment to ensuring that all workers, including migrants, are treated fairly and that employers adhere to established labor standards.
“The minimum standards that apply to Fijian workers apply to all other migrant workers as well,” Singh stated, underscoring the Ministry’s role in upholding workers’ rights across the board. He noted that the Ministry has received information that the missing workers are untraceable, while the employer is actively trying to find them.
Singh encouraged any workers with grievances against their employers to visit a local Ministry of Employment office to report their issues. He assured that once the missing workers are found, the Ministry would be ready to investigate any claims of mistreatment.
This situation highlights the importance of monitoring the conditions of migrant workers and ensuring that their rights are protected. As the Ministry continues its investigation, there is hope that the workers will be located and that any mistreatment claims will be thoroughly addressed, contributing to a fairer working environment for all.
