Seven contestants are set to compete for the title of Miss Nasinu Carnival 2024 in the coming two weeks. One of the contestants, Vinaina Marawa, aims to use this opportunity to advocate against domestic violence in both homes and communities.
Ms. Marawa is determined to leverage the week-long carnival to address this crucial issue. Fiji is facing concerningly high rates of violence against women, with statistics indicating that two-thirds of women in Fiji experience physical or sexual violence from an intimate partner at some point in their lives. Moreover, around 60 percent of women encounter difficult situations at home due to a lack of support and abuse.
Representing the Nasinu Town Council, Ms. Marawa is familiar with the beauty pageant scene. At just 18 years old, she participated in the Hibiscus Festival in the Teen category. She perceives her involvement in events like the Nasinu Carnival as a chance to serve her community with dignity and respect. “It’s not just about appearances; it’s about representing our community,” Ms. Marawa stated. She plans to focus on advocacy and fostering national change throughout the carnival, expressing her eagerness to use her voice for this vital cause.
Ms. Marawa believes that true change begins at home. As the eldest of eight siblings raised by a single mother, she recognizes the significant responsibilities she had to shoulder. Balancing household tasks with her education was difficult, but the unwavering support from her mother made her journey valuable. During this year’s Nasinu Carnival, the Kadavu native will utilize the platform to advocate for change.
