Miss Hibiscus Melania Tora: A Crown with a Purpose

Melania Tora, the newly crowned Miss Hibiscus 2024, spent her week following the pageant giving thanks at church for her victory. The 24-year-old emphasized the importance of gratitude and praise, stating it is non-negotiable in her life. She expressed excitement about celebrating her win with her family from Sabeto, as well as her connections to Vanuabalavu in Lau.

After attending a service at Fiji Connect held at the USP Laucala campus, Ms. Tora reflected on her relationship with God. “Being with Jesus is so wonderful. I am not perfect in any way, shape, or form, but I have had my own journey and testimony,” she shared.

Ms. Tora expressed that God’s grace has surrounded her, empowering her to embrace her victory, whether or not she wears the crown. She spoke about the overwhelming support she received from her community, stating, “They have been a great support, sending me messages, and I am grateful. I will go and celebrate with them soon.”

In her commitment to advocacy, Ms. Tora mentioned her ongoing work with cancer survivors, sex workers, juveniles, and Inspire Pacific. She believes her new platform will enhance her efforts to foster tangible, sustainable change in these areas.

Expressing gratitude for the other contestants, she recognized the collaborative spirit that defined the event. “It was overwhelming early mornings and many tears along the way, but they were happy tears,” she noted, attributing her strength to her faith and support network.

She encouraged future participants of the Miss Hibiscus pageant, stating, “If you are considering to participate next year, please do so. It doesn’t matter where you come from or what ethnicity you are. If you feel you have what it takes to make a real difference in the community, I encourage you to take that risk.”
