Miss Hibiscus Festival: A Family Business Shines with Tradition and Innovation

The Miss Hibiscus Festival made a lively comeback this year after a five-year hiatus, offering new marketing opportunities for local businesses. One of the prominent participants was GMJ’s Catering and Services, a family-run enterprise that took the opportunity to promote its goal of cultivating young entrepreneurs.

This year, GMJ’s Catering and Services distinguished itself by presenting traditional, authentic cuisine that stood out from other offerings at Hibiscus Village on the Suva foreshore. Their distinctive approach highlighted their commitment to cultural heritage and supporting the development of future business leaders.

Fane Vereivalu, co-owner of the business, expressed that they had eagerly anticipated the opportunity presented by the Hibiscus Festival.

With encouragement from family and friends, Ms. Vereivalu stated they aimed to create and serve something unique to the audience, which led to the launch of their “Traditional Authentic Food” concept. “We wanted to offer something different and unique this year, as the Hibiscus Festival draws people from various backgrounds,” she remarked.

The family involvement was a significant aspect, as they engaged their children, nephews, and nieces during the two-week holiday to teach them how to apply lessons from their elders about earning money through traditional food.

Through their family business and catering efforts, Ms. Vereivalu pointed out that their distinct taste and affordable pricing differentiate them in the market. Hailing from Nukunuku Lakeba in Lau, she was resolute about participating in the festival this year.
