Miss Hibiscus Contestant’s Harassment Claims Spark Police Investigation

Authorities are set to investigate an alleged sexual harassment complaint involving a contestant from the Miss Hibiscus pageant. Police spokesperson Ana Naisoro confirmed that a report was filed at the Totogo Police Station on Friday, and the investigation is currently in progress.

The allegations emerged last week when a contestant reported being groped by a guest during the crowning ceremony on September 7. This incident prompted the Minister for Local Government, Maciu Nalumisa, to initiate an internal investigation into the claims.

Mr. Nalumisa stated that a team has been assembled to thoroughly examine the events of that night, emphasizing the need for professionalism to protect all contestants. He expressed confidence that the investigation would be completed within the week.

In his efforts to address the situation, Mr. Nalumisa contacted Tevita Boseiwaqa, the chairperson of Suva City Council’s special administration, who is also part of the investigation team.

The contestant has filed a formal complaint at the Totogo Police Station. Initially, she intended to wait for a witness returning from abroad before proceeding, but after discussions with her family, she chose to report the incident without further delay. She alleges that an intoxicated man jabbed her in the back, and she promptly reported the incident to event officials.

Mr. Nalumisa further noted that alcohol consumption should not serve as an excuse for inappropriate conduct.
