Police are launching an investigation into a sexual harassment complaint made by a contestant in the Miss Hibiscus pageant. Police spokesperson Ana Naisoro confirmed that a report was filed at the Totogo Police Station on Friday, and an investigation is currently underway.
The allegations emerged after a contestant reported that she was “groped” by a guest during the crowning night on September 7, stating that she was “jabbed on the back.” This matter caught the attention of Maciu Nalumisa, the Minister for Local Government, who ordered an internal investigation into the incident.
Mr. Nalumisa stated that a team is working to uncover the facts surrounding that night, emphasizing the need for professionalism to protect the interests of all contestants. He expects the investigation to conclude this week.
Last week, Nalumisa communicated with Tevita Boseiwaqa, the chairperson of the Suva City Council’s special administration, who is also involved in the investigation. The contestant has officially lodged her complaint, expressing an initial desire to wait for a witness returning from abroad before proceeding. However, following discussions with her family, she chose to report the incident without further delay.
The contestant alleges that a man, who appeared to be intoxicated, jabbed her in the back, and she immediately notified event officials about the incident. Mr. Nalumisa remarked that alcohol consumption should never serve as justification for inappropriate behavior.
