Pacific Specialists Healthcare (PSH) recently celebrated a remarkable case of recovery after 80-year-old Carol Wallen, from Melbourne, Australia, experienced serious health complications while vacationing in Fiji. Wallen had arrived in Fiji in mid-December 2023 with her son Darren to mark her milestone birthday when her condition took a turn for the worse at the Sheraton Fiji Resort. Following her initial treatment at a local clinic and later at Nadi Hospital, her son promptly sought out PSH for her transfer.
Upon arrival at PSH, Mrs. Wallen suffered a cardiac arrest, where her heart stopped for approximately 10 minutes. However, thanks to the swift actions of the medical team, led by Dr. Ratu Vereniki Raiwalui, she was successfully resuscitated and given multi-organ support. Mrs. Wallen expressed immense gratitude for the care she received, stating the staff was “marvelous” and attributing her recovery to their expertise. She is now eager to return to Fiji for another holiday once she fully recovers.
The managing director of PSH, Parvish Kumar, emphasized the importance of hospitals forming partnerships with hotels and resorts to ensure guests receive timely medical attention. Darren Wallen affirmed the quality of care, noting that it matched or exceeded that of Australian hospitals.
Dr. Raiwalui recounted Mrs. Wallen’s critical condition upon arrival but praised the care that led to her significant improvement, eventually allowing her to be taken outside in a wheelchair just days after being taken off life support. The Wallens were eventually repatriated to Australia with an intensive care team, ensuring her safe return home.
This story reflects not only the excellence of PSH but also the vital role healthcare partnerships play in enhancing the safety and wellbeing of tourists. It highlights a beacon of hope for travelers, emphasizing that prompt and professional medical care is available, potentially saving lives in times of crisis.
In summary, Carol Wallen’s situation underscores the effectiveness of dedicated healthcare teams and the impact of strategic partnerships between medical facilities and the tourism industry, fostering a safer travel environment for visitors to Fiji and promoting confidence in its healthcare services.
