A remarkable success story has emerged from Pacific Specialists Healthcare (PSH) involving 80-year-old Carol Wallen, who traveled from Melbourne, Australia, to Fiji to celebrate her milestone birthday. During her stay at the Sheraton Fiji Resort on Denarau Island, Mrs. Wallen encountered unexpected health complications that led to her being transferred first to a local clinic and then to Nadi Hospital as her condition worsened.
In a timely decision, her son, Darren, researched alternative facilities and arranged for her transfer to PSH in Nadi. Tragically, Mrs. Wallen suffered a cardiopulmonary arrest during her time there, with her heart ceasing to beat for approximately 10 minutes. Fortunately, the medical team at PSH, led by Consultant Anaesthesia and Intensive Care Specialist Dr. Ratu Vereniki Raiwalui, acted quickly and effectively, resuscitating her and providing support for her vital organs.
Following her treatment, Mrs. Wallen expressed her gratitude for the exceptional care she received, stating that the staff was incredibly supportive and contributed significantly to her recovery. She has plans to return to Fiji for another holiday once her health fully improves.
PSH’s Managing Director, Parvish Kumar, emphasized the importance of partnerships between hotels and healthcare providers to ensure tourists receive immediate medical attention when needed. He expressed that the treatment Mrs. Wallen received was comparable to, or even better than, what she might find in Australia. Darren reinforced this sentiment, encouraging friends and family to seek treatment at PSH if they ever fall ill while in Fiji.
Dr. Raiwalui highlighted the gravity of Mrs. Wallen’s condition upon arrival and noted her remarkable recovery, marking a significant improvement after just four days. The medical support she received was intensive and effective, leading to her successful rehabilitation.
The Wallens were later flown back to Australia on a special Medivac flight, accompanied by an Intensive Care team from Rescue Services, ensuring a safe return.
This heartwarming incident not only showcases the dedication of healthcare professionals at PSH but also reinforces the value of swift and specialized medical care in emergency situations. It serves as a reminder of the critical role that healthcare partnerships play within the tourism sector, aiming to provide peace of mind for travelers seeking adventure far from home. With ongoing advancements and collaboration, the future of healthcare tourism appears bright, offering hope for improved medical experiences abroad.
