In a heartwarming turn of events, Joshua Dart and his hiking group were thrilled to find missing bushwalker Hadi Nazari alive in Kosciuszko National Park. The hikers were enjoying the stunning views on the first day of their trip when they heard cries for help echoing through the mountains.

Dart recounted the emotional moment: “My mate James looked down towards the shouting, and we shouted back. We heard him saying, ‘I need help.’ When we realized it was him, I couldn’t believe it. We were just emotional, we were crying, and he was in tears.”

Nazari, a 23-year-old from Melbourne, had been missing since Boxing Day, prompting extensive search efforts for nearly two weeks. His incredible survival skills allowed him to stay alive by consuming foraged berries, creek water, and two muesli bars he found in a hut. When found around 3:15 PM off the circuit near Blue Lake, he displayed remarkable resilience despite being scratched and sunburned. Recognizing the severity of his situation, Nazari expressed gratitude amidst his plight, saying simply, “praise God.”

At the time of their encounter, a member of Dart’s group had seen Nazari’s missing person alert online, which heightened their awareness even though they were not actively searching. After being discovered, Nazari borrowed a phone to call his mother, leading to a helicopter being dispatched to him shortly thereafter. He was winched to a nearby command post where he was reunited with his relieved family.

Emotions were high as cheers erupted across the campground, highlighting the joy and relief felt by loved ones. Nazari remains under observation at Cooma Hospital but is reported to be in good health. Once he feels ready, law enforcement officials hope to discuss his experience with him further.

This incredible story emphasizes the power of community support and hope in the face of difficulty. As NSW Police Superintendent Andrew Spliet underscored, “When you’re out there searching for someone whose life may well be at risk, it’s very important that you keep going, stay positive, and stay hopeful.” Dart reflected on the miraculous nature of their encounter by stating, “It’s just a miracle. I’m so grateful for him to get out; he really kind of rescued himself, we just happened to be there at the right place.”

Ultimately, the incident showcases the resilience of the human spirit, serving as a poignant reminder that even in the direst circumstances, strength and determination can lead to extraordinary outcomes. Hope remains a powerful force in overcoming challenges, and this reunion stands as a testament to the enduring connections we share with each other.
