For almost 20 years, The Mission at Natuvu Creek has been a refuge for individuals of diverse backgrounds, attracting visitors from around the world. Located on a sprawling 750-acre estate that includes an extinct volcano, tropical forests, and the scenic shores of Buca Bay, the mission was established two decades ago to provide medical services and wellness education to Fiji’s rural communities.
The Mission at Natuvu Creek operates as a non-denominational, faith-based nonprofit organization. It brings together volunteers from various religious backgrounds who share a commitment to service. Medical professionals work diligently to provide care, and their extensive experience combined with the warm hospitality characteristic of Fiji enhances the healing process. Annually, about 20 medical teams volunteer at the mission, offering crucial care to Fijians while gaining a deeper appreciation for the local culture.
Dr. Randy Edwards, an optometrist from California and a volunteer at the mission, called his experience in Fiji illuminating. He expressed gratitude for the opportunity to help others and emphasized the warmth and politeness of the local people. Dr. Peter Andrews, a Sacramento-based ophthalmologist specializing in eye surgery, referred to the clinic as an “oasis,” noting its strong reputation among locals who trust it for necessary treatments.
In addition to medical services, volunteers have the chance to connect with spiritual care, something that distinguishes The Mission at Natuvu Creek. Founder Dr. Marta Tooma emphasized the importance of not just addressing physical ailments but also fostering a sense of eternity in patients. Notably, a key moment was when corneas donated by Tissue Bank International were successfully transplanted into a young local woman, restoring her vision and dramatically changing her life.
Among the most recent patients, Nasiban Bibi traveled at 4 AM to receive cataract surgery, hoping to return home with clear vision. Another local, Filomena Tui, spoke about her excitement for the free medical services, describing them as a significant blessing for Vanua Levu’s population. Many others shared similar stories, reflecting the urgent need for such healthcare initiatives in the region.
The mission maintains a culture of equal treatment, valuing every individual, whether a doctor or kitchen staff. This inclusive approach uplifts everyone involved. Vika Vakaotia, the mission’s chef, expressed joy in preparing nourishing meals, which often feature plant-based options to promote healthy living. Locals also benefit economically during clinic days by selling food, supporting their families through this endeavor.
Since its establishment, The Mission at Natuvu Creek has served over 10,000 patients annually. With limited eye specialists in the nearby divisional hospital, the mission plays a vital role in addressing healthcare needs in the area. Its volunteers offer a wide range of services, including cataract surgeries and general medical care, while fostering connections through outreach and ministry. Currently, a dental clinic is being conducted, providing essential care to the community. The mission is supported by the Tooma Family Foundation and regularly hosts visiting students from Pepperdine University, who spend a month assisting with medical services.
