Miracle Journey: Young Boy’s Triumph Over Cancer

Three years ago, Vakaloloma Sugu experienced a troubling pregnancy with her third child, feeling different compared to her previous experiences. After the birth of her son, Elijah Moraiah Raivalita, her concerns were confirmed by medical professionals.

“I had lumps all over my body, and my pregnant belly felt heavier than expected,” Ms. Sugu shared. “I was much weaker than in my other pregnancies.” Despite sensing that something was wrong, doctors reassured her that everything was normal during her visits.

Ms. Sugu eagerly anticipated her son’s arrival, but the situation took a dire turn when doctors indicated that Elijah’s heartbeat was irregular, necessitating an immediate cesarean section. Following the surgery, she was unable to see her son as he was taken to another room urgently.

Feeling anxious, she recalled, “I started seeing nurses coming in with other mothers’ babies, and I longed for that moment with my son.” After persistent inquiries, she learned that Elijah had a distended stomach and needed to be admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit for further evaluation.

Overcome with emotion upon seeing her son covered in medical equipment, she was devastated. A few days later, the results revealed that Elijah had neuroblastoma, a type of cancer.

“It was difficult for us to process the diagnosis,” Ms. Sugu explained. “The doctors told us there was a tumor near his kidney, and his liver was enlarged. Hearing the word cancer shocked us, and we immediately felt it was a life-or-death situation.”

The family was unfamiliar with cancer and did not know about supportive organizations until they connected with WOWS Kids Fiji, which helped them navigate their journey from disbelief to acceptance. They received assistance with medication, transportation, and emotional support.

Just one month after his birth, Elijah began his first chemotherapy session, followed by surgery to remove the tumor. Ms. Sugu vividly remembers praying for divine intervention before the operation. When they arrived at the hospital, doctors delivered wonderful news: Elijah’s tumor was no longer present.

“His body had returned to normal,” she said, reflecting on the overwhelming joy, tears, and gratitude that accompanied the miraculous update.

Today, Elijah, now three years old, is one of the youngest cancer survivors in the nation. “He is a happy, healthy child, bursting with energy. It’s a blessing he made it through; his strength defines who he is,” Ms. Sugu remarked.

Even after the diagnosis, the family remains vigilant in protecting Elijah. Ms. Sugu encourages other parents to remain firm in their faith and underscores the importance of early detection.

“Please, if your child is unwell, take them to the hospital; don’t hesitate. Do not deny them necessary medical care.”
