Ministry of Education Addresses Violence at Rugby Competition

The Ministry of Education has strongly condemned an incident in which a bus was stoned following the Eastern Zone Deans rugby competition over the weekend.

Minister for Education, Aseri Radrodro, is scheduled to meet with the Fiji Secondary Schools Rugby Union today to discuss the future participation of schools and students involved in violence and unruly behavior.

Radrodro stated that the Ministry of Education would not hesitate to suspend schools from participating in the Deans competition if such behaviors threaten the safety of others.

“Students and teachers are reminded that sports are a unifying activity and a professional career path for many Fijians. We cannot allow sports to be marred by indiscipline and violence,” said Radrodro.

He is urging all schools and students to urgently hold serious discussions on this matter.

“All schools and students should note that provincial teams have previously been suspended from local competitions due to violent and unruly behavior by their fans or teams. We will not hesitate to consider the same,” he said.

“The safety of the general public, students, and fans is paramount,” Radrodro added.
