Government ministers are uniting in a heartfelt appeal to parents, urging them to dedicate more time to their children as part of a concerted effort to combat the rising drug issues affecting the community. In a powerful video address, Justice Minister Siromi Turaga emphasized the significance of making thoughtful choices, highlighting that the decisions children make can lead to long-term effects on their health, education, and overall well-being.
Turaga encouraged children to pause and reflect before making decisions, and to seek advice from trusted adults in their lives. Supporting this initiative, Assistant Minister for Foreign Affairs Lenora Qereqeretabua called upon parents and guardians to prioritize their children by reducing time spent on commitments such as social functions and social media. She underscored the importance of communicating with children in a loving manner, stating, “Our children are our present and our future; they deserve our attention.”
Minister for Youth and Sports Jese Saukuru echoed these sentiments, urging families to cherish the moments they share with their children. He advised, “Sit with them, talk to them, listen to them, and spend uninterrupted quality time with them.”
Minister for Lands and Mineral Resources Filimoni Vosarogo also encouraged parents to prioritize quality family time over other obligations. He asserted that children need consistent teaching and reassurance from their guardians.
Moreover, Ratu Viliame Seruvakula, chairman of the Great Council of Chiefs, emphasized the collective responsibility of the community in raising and protecting children to ensure their future success. He noted the small size of Fiji and the importance of unity in addressing the challenges of drug-related issues and concerning behaviors currently faced.
This rallying cry from leaders reflects a deep understanding of the impact that quality time and supportive parenting can have on children, reinforcing the belief that a united approach is essential for creating a safer and healthier environment for future generations.
Overall, this appeal highlights a positive shift towards prioritizing family connections, which can significantly contribute to building resilience in the community and steering children away from negative influences. By fostering healthy communication and strong family bonds, there is hope for a brighter future.
