The Minister for Local Government, Maciu Nalusima, took immediate steps last night to assist eight individuals found living at Sukuna Park. Upon discovering three individuals sleeping in the park’s dais, he reached out to the Suva City Council for support at 7:00 PM, leading to five others joining them.

Minister Nalusima described the encounter as a deeply impactful discussion, where he listened to the individuals share their stories, showcasing their feelings of neglect and the mental barriers they face while trying to improve their situations. He expressed concern about the stigma surrounding homelessness, which compounds their struggles and hampers their progress in life.

The Minister pledged to collaborate with his ministry and the council to develop strategies that cater specifically to the needs of these young Fijians, focusing on providing accommodation and employment opportunities. Additionally, he mentioned that two young women expressed interest in starting small businesses, while a young man expressed a desire to return to his village in Lau.

He emphasized the importance of consulting relevant stakeholders to help these individuals realize their dreams and aspirations. Minister Nalusima reassured the community that his ministry would work closely with these young Fijians and key partners to prevent them from returning to the streets.
