Fisheries and Forests Minister Alitia Bainivalu recently explored two potential aquaculture pond locations in Kadavu: Tabuya and Solovola villages within the Nabukelevu District. As part of her tour, the Minister also visited a seaweed farm located in Cevai, which is operated by Maika Vunituraga.
Bainivalu’s tour of Kadavu began last week, during which she engaged with government officials at the Vunisea Government Station. The visit culminated yesterday with a stop at the Kavala Fisheries Station.
This initiative signals a positive step towards enhancing local aquaculture efforts, which could provide economic opportunities for the communities in Kadavu. By promoting sustainable fishing practices and seaweed farming, the government is not only supporting local livelihoods but also contributing to environmental conservation.
The focus on aquaculture presents a promising avenue for boosting both food security and local fisheries in the region, showcasing the potential for development in Fiji’s agricultural sector.
