Mindset Matters: Transforming Fiji’s Rugby League Future

The mindset and attitude of young rugby league players in Fiji are vital topics for Wise Kativerata, the head coach of the Vodafone Fiji Bati. He recognizes the wealth of talent in the country, yet he stresses that a positive mindset is essential for achieving success in the sport.

Kativerata highlights the differences between rugby league and rugby union, pointing out that rugby league is characterized by a higher standard of professionalism. “Rugby league is a bit different from rugby union; we operate more professionally with structured programs and adhere to schedules,” he remarked. He emphasized punctuality for training sessions, stating that if practice starts at seven o’clock, players should arrive by six to prepare.

The coach has noted a rise in school participation in rugby league, with about 100 schools currently involved, including 34 girls’ teams. “The growth of rugby league is evident,” he said. Kativerata also mentioned an upcoming trip to Vanua Levu, where the team will visit Savusavu and Labasa, coinciding with Fiji Day festivities. He hopes this will raise awareness of rugby league as a significant sport in Fiji, presenting it as a pathway to opportunities outside the country.
