The Government may owe millions of dollars in compensation to individuals affected by coups, according to Sashi Kiran, chairperson of the Fiji Truth and Reconciliation Commission steering committee. Kiran indicated that this compensation would be necessary for victims impacted by earlier coups.
She mentioned that compensation for these victims is a significant point of discussion in the establishment of the Fiji Truth and Reconciliation Commission. The extent of suffering caused by these events, including physical harm and emotional distress, could result in compensation reaching into the millions.
Kiran emphasized that past incidents have left long-lasting effects on numerous families, such as the destruction of homes, economic hardships, and deep emotional trauma. She noted that the commission was initiated to promote healing and provide closure for those impacted.
However, she acknowledged that no financial compensation could truly replace what was lost or alleviate the struggles endured over the years. The emotional wounds caused by events like home burnings and instances of sexual violation remain significant challenges that the commission is still addressing.
Ultimately, Kiran stated that the primary purpose of the commission is to ensure that past mistakes are not repeated in the future.
