Millennium Milestones: Meet Fiji’s First Babies of 2000

In the early hours of January 2, 2000, the first baby of the new millennium made his debut in Ba, Fiji. Named Samisoni Vu Ruanaudolu, which signifies “2000” in Fijian, he was born at 12:05 AM, weighing in at 3.95 kilograms. His parents, 35-year-old Luke Waqalevu and 27-year-old Merewalesi Lewe, were ecstatic about their new addition. Samisoni is the couple’s second child, following their five-year-old son.

The birth of Samisoni not only marks a significant moment for his family but also places them in the spotlight, as the Fijian Government announced a monetary reward of $5,000 for the first baby boy and girl born in the new millennium. Mr. Waqalevu expressed a desire to donate part of this potential reward to their church.

In a related event, the first baby girl of the millennium, weighing 3.67 kilograms, was born to 21-year-old Joshika Chand at Lautoka Hospital at 1:10 AM. Ms. Chand mentioned that if her daughter indeed received the recognition as the first baby girl, she intended to set up a bank account for her using the award.

This joyful occasion highlights the happiness of new beginnings and the hope that comes with the arrival of new life. The parents’ intentions to give back to their communities reflect a commitment to both gratitude and social responsibility, emphasizing the positive impact that the birth of these children can have on their families and beyond.
